01The bay

The last house before the sea

Medvidina is one of a string of coves below the village of Gdinj, on the steep southern flank of Hvar facing Korčula and the Pelješac peninsula. You come down on a gravel track through vineyards and olive groves; the last few hundred metres are first-gear driving, and honestly, that's part of it.

The beach is pebble, shallow along the shore, over a sandy bottom you can see from above as a pale patch in the water. Mornings the bay sits in the shadow of the hill and the sea is glass; around midday the mistral comes up and cools the terrace; in the evening the boats come back in. There are neighbours, but not many — and that is more or less the only sound besides cicadas.

02The water

A bed under a pine, the sea below it

On the rock beside the house there is a paved platform with a 200 × 200 bed under white curtains. You get into the water straight off it, down a ladder — no walking over pebbles.

A dinghy with an outboard and a mooring in front of the house come with the apartment. Enough to be in Srhov Dolac or Jedra first thing in the morning before anyone else arrives, or to spend an afternoon in coves you cannot reach by road at all.

  • Private sundeck with a 200 × 200 bed
  • Dinghy and mooring — no charge
  • Ladder into the sea from the platform
  • Barbecue on the terrace

04A day here

What a day looks like

Morning

07:30

Morning

The bay is still in the hill's shadow and the sea is glass. The best hour to swim across and back before the cicadas wake up.

Midday

13:00

Midday

Mistral. The curtains on the sundeck fill, the terrace cools down, and the day reduces to shade, a book and something cold.

Evening

20:30

Evening

The barbecue, fish if you were lucky. And then the part of the night where there are no street lights, so you find the Milky Way without looking for it.

06Getting here

How to reach us

DRVENIKSUĆURAJGDINJJELSASTARI GRADHVAR30 min24 km25 kmMEDVIDINA

01

By ferry

Drvenik – Sućuraj, a 30-minute crossing, ten to eleven sailings a day in summer. Drvenik is on the coastal road, 96 km south-east of Split.

02

Across the island

24 km from Sućuraj to Gdinj, or 25 km if you come from Jelsa. In Gdinj you turn off towards the sea, signposted Medvidina.

03

Down the gravel track

The last stretch is unsurfaced and steep, but any ordinary car makes it with a little patience. Parking is at the house.

04

Or by sea

The mooring is in front of the house. If you're arriving on your own boat, let us know the day before so we can keep the berth free.

The alternative is the Split – Stari Grad ferry and about sixty kilometres east along the island road. Sućuraj is quicker, and better looking.

08Questions

Frequently asked

01Is there a shop or restaurant in the bay?

There isn't, and that's half the reason people come. The nearest shop is up in Gdinj. Most guests fill the fridge in Sućuraj or Jelsa on the way in and cook — the kitchen is equipped and the barbecue is on the terrace.

02Is there air conditioning?

The house runs on solar, so there is no air conditioning. Stone, pine shade and the afternoon mistral do the work, and nights by the water here are noticeably cooler than in town.

03What is the internet like?

Wi-Fi is free and covers both apartments. Fine for email, calls and navigation; if you plan to work remotely all day, bring mobile data as a backup.

04Do I need a car?

You do. There is nowhere to get to from the bay without one — except into the sea.

05Is it suitable for small children?

Yes. The beach at the head of the bay is pebble with a shallow, calm entry. The sundeck ladder is for stronger swimmers. A cot is available on request.

06What is the minimum stay?

It depends on the date — seven nights in July and August, four to five in the shoulder months. The booking form shows the exact minimum for your dates.

07How is payment handled?

A 30 % deposit confirms the booking; the balance is paid in cash on arrival. Tourist tax is already in the rate.

08Can we bring a dog?

Mention it in your enquiry and we'll sort it out — it depends on the dates and on whether the house is full at the time.
